I particularly love Carl Sandburg's!

I know! There are others who would agree with him. LOL.

These are wonderful. My favorite quote is, “There are only 3 rules for writing a novel. Too bad no one knows what they are.”

Love it! Do you know who said it? Maybe I'll include it next time.

These are all great, and the Emerson quote at the end is p.r.i.c.e.l.e.s.s.

It was! And it was there for the taking. As if it were just waiting there for me to pluck it out and put it in the perfect place.

Yes please to more of this!

The jotting is simple, but the occurring is the hard part 🤣 love these. And this particular quote is pretty much the topic of my last Substack post! https://tamzin.substack.com/p/when-the-tap-runs-dry

Thank you Ramona! What a wonderful (true, insightful🤣) list. Entertaining and thought provoking at once, a great way to start my day. Hard to choose a favourite.

It was nice to be reminded about jon winokur, whose books I used to love. Also-- you’re officially the first person on substack who I’ve seen mentioning Leacock. So-- subscribing.

Ramona Grigg's avatar

Nice! Thank you. But I thought Leacock was pretty well known. He was the humorist's humorist of his time.

Karl Straub's avatar

Yes, agreed, but his fame peaked out in 1925. I only know about him because I read that Groucho Marx was a fan.

It wasn't Stephen Leacock who made that remark about "the occurring." It was Joyce Cary, the Anglo-Irish writer. I remember it because it really struck me when I was reading Cary. He's well worth reading.

Thank you! I’ll fix it. 👍
