Merry Christmas From Your Heathen Friend

Because the holidays are meant for everyone.

This is the kind of corny Christmas Card I used to make and send. That’s my cottage in the background. BELIEVE!

I’m here to wish you all the happiest of holidays and to share the piece I wrote for my other Substack blog, Constant Commoner, but before I do I want to say just a little about the brouhaha over ‘Substackers Against Nazis’.

We sent the letter and days later we got our answer: Substack will continue hosting Nazis and supremacists and people who bully and threaten those who go against them in any way. When I signed that letter and posted it here I knew full well what the answer would be. We made our point in ways far more successfully than I might have imagined, and that’s good enough for me.

I wish they had listened and done things differently, but in the end it’s their company. I’m here as a guest and overall, because of you all, the experience is mainly positive.

I’m not going to leave Substack. I’ve worked hard to build this community and I’m thrilled with the friends I’ve made. I’m overjoyed by the camaraderie among us. I fully believed in our mission to wake up the owners here and I said so. At the same time, I tried not to offend any of my friends who might have felt otherwise.

I think we’re okay. I hope we’re okay. My feelings on this aren’t going to go away, but I’m not going to dwell on it. It’s Substack’s problem now. Unless something drastic happens, I won’t make any of it an issue here at Writer Everlasting.

I may talk about it at Constant Commoner, but I meant it when I said I want WE to be a safe haven. I want this to be a place of comfort and, while I felt it necessary to make my own position clear about hate speech as a writer involved in advocacy, it’s out there now. I’m going to move on.
