I've watched my share, and last night's was pretty entertaining. Kimmel even returned a shot at the orange traitor at the end, which squarely hit the target.
I missed it too! This is how I described it on FB:
I'm surprised I'm not upset that I missed the Oscars tonight, probably the first one in my adult life. I've organized Oscar pools, hosted parties, and done an annual wrap up of my Big Fat Opinions for many years.
When I was a kid, we used to stand out on Beverly Blvd and watch the parade of limos going from Beverly Hills downtown to the Shrine or Dorothy Chandler Pavilion hoping to see a movie star (of course, we never did)
This year, I had a Charm School that went until after 5:00, the party I was invited to was in the East Bay, and the NYT was wrong, I couldn't watch it with the ABC app.
It's noteworthy (so I'm noting it) how calm I am. No FOMO. No guilt that I'm disappointing people who look forward to my recap. No bending myself into a pretzel to do and be all the things.
Wow! I'm not alone! It does feel like progress. I think it also says something, either about the Oscars itself or about the movies they're honoring these days. Or about my age. I'm not sure what it is, but the thrill is definitely gone.
Love this Ramona! I remember so baby if these now that you do! LOL Great memory of magical moments …always the unexpected and unprepared things that make Oscar’s the best! I couldn’t stream anywhere 1/2 hour here 1/2 hour there without committing to pay… but following FB comments kept me updated. I used to love the red carpet stuff too but that’s gotten way outta I don’t know what… too much attention to bodies, hair, clothes?… I like the genuine smiles and friendly chats. No poise or pose for me. Thank you for making my smile and bringing back rememberies! 😊🥰
I stopped watching them years ago. I now work at a small tasting room and we hosted an oscar night last night, so I had to watch them, and I actually really enjoyed it. I came home with a list of movies I'd like to see! Cheers to the freedom to watch or not!
That was fun . . . lots of old memories in there. I missed last night as well, we had a family get together. My most memorable Oscar night ever was March 26th, 1958. Dan asked me to marry him . . . and I said yes.
I'm joining you on the step-away line after last night. The choice mirrors a similar decision re social media in general. Too much noise & distraction for a purpose that no longer matters. Translation: it's time to live my life, not notch someone else's agenda. Just sayin'...
The Oscars lost me as someone who watched religiously when they gave Best Picture to Crash instead of Brokeback Mountain. I know the Oscars has a history of looking past the real best picture, but that just did me in for caring much. Sadly, it seems like things have only gotten worse since then.
There were so many times I disagreed with best picture. And not giving directors top prize when their films won Best Picture. Look how long it took Steven Spielberg to win Best Director.
And acting awards--going way back, Henry Fonda didn't win an Oscar until he was dead.
Great post. I believe you’re referring to Roberto Benigni, who flew over the chairs to accept for Best Foreign Language Film, Life is Beautiful, which he wrote, directed and starred in.
I also remember watching the Oscar's as a child with my mom in the orange grove suburbia of SFV when she dressed up like Elizabeth Taylor, and later in my teens from Glendale and Los Feliz, where Hollywood was so close and so far away. I talked my husband into the deal where I watched football and March Madness with him, and he watched the Academy's with me. We had such laughs together. Like sports, that event has paled for me since his death and the glamor of the corporate media machine that now spues out "movies" has faded. I still love sitting in a dark theater and watching magic happen, when it hapoens. I just don't have much patience or interest in the after hype or surges for applause.
I almost always watch. Many fond memories of watching with my mother. This year's show was one of the best in recent years. Quite entertaining. And I have not yet seen any of the nominated movies! Now, I might have to check out Virgin River!
This was the first time in many years that we watched the Oscar’s from start to finish. It’s not that we saw all the movies. We only saw the top three. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was (sorry, Ramona). Kimmel was great (I agree, it is a difficult job to do). I particularly loved the end when he embarrassed the former orange monster. That would have been worth sitting through even a mediocre awards show.
Wow, that's a helluva run!

Once I accepted that I was ready to break my record I knew all was not lost. The clips will do it!
Well, there's a million of 'em out there!
Yes! Very funny.
I too like the Oscars. Don't have to think. Which is not what they intend. Or maybe is : )

It just doesn't feel like fun anymore. Maybe I've just seen too many. But it is fun to make fun of them! 😉
Yes…making fun! 😄😅remember so many I was trying to say… not baby🙄

Best Oscar Night ever! I can't top that! ❤️
Memorable indeed, Janice! How wonderful to celebrate each year on Hollywood Nights! 😊🎶🙌🎉

Right! He was delightful. The audience loved him.
Yes. It was such an authentic moment of joy.

Golly. Have never ever watched them.
Something about egos rankled then and does so now. Besides its such a subjective vote for Best Whatever. Also, sometimes, tokenism...
Thanks for the memories. Stopped watching 10 years ago. No longer has any appeal for me. I love good movies but not poor award shows.
