I'm on three a week, including a podcast every other week (typically), and a regular schedule is helping me keep my life in order. In future, I may go twice a week, once I've established my variety of content. Famous folks writing topically can still get good response if they write daily (thinking my esteemed colleague Heather Richardson here) but that's not the case, I suspect, for the rest of us. Consider your open rates, and other feedback from your readers. I don't have the answers, mind, but I know I struggle to keep up with the other Substacks to which I subscribe for time's sake alone.

I am starting on my blogging journey and have written one a week so far, I write an article for a magazine monthly and have my own newsletter monthly ( want to create on Substack any ideas) I digress…do what makes you happy and don’t over promise yourself or others… personally twice a week is enough xx

I love what you have to say regardless of frequency. I look forward to reading your thoughts each time I see you have posted. I just think you don’t want to find yourself working so hard that it becomes a chore for you. BTW: I didn’t comment on your “be my diary” piece because I’m still deciding how I feel. I understand the sense of futility and weariness with the mountain we’re all trying to climb but I also believe in the value of putting your personal truth out there. It may not change the world, but the choir you’re preaching to needs some shoring up sometimes. Love this thoughtful space!

I’m going to give you a terrifically non-answery answer. When I am getting them every day it feels overwhelming. It seems like a couple times a week would probably be enough.

But, on the other hand, the more frequent they are, the more momentum. I read (or have Siri read) them as they come in rather than letting them languish.

So, keep on keeping on with whatever cadence works for you, and I’ll adjust! ♥️

I prefer the once a week model, but the beauty of e-mail subscriptions is that the reader can choose when to read the newsletters they receive. If you're getting good engagement, then what you are doing is right 🤗. Trying to publish less would probably be counter productive.

Glad you asked because I *almost* unsubscribed. As a new reader, I was surprised to receive these every. single. day. Wondered whether I had missed something when I signed up. It is a lot and I would rather read with enthusiasm a once-a-week email than ignore or only partially read daily or nearly-daily ones. (And yeah, I subscribe to HCR too and also don't read all of hers every day. With her, I feel obliged to keep up on current events and often NEED her calm historical perspective.) Thanks for posing the question.

Publish when you want (or feel like), Ramona. When I have too many newsletters (sorry, I subscribe to other writers 😔) they go into my Hold folder; when I run out of stuff to read, I hit the Hold folder. No pressure.

Yes, I think twice a week will be a good frequency.

No freaking clue. I was publishing once per week, plus breaking news in my niche, and I can't tell from the data if the extra posts helped or hurt.

Interesting thread, Ramona. I read all the comments. Here's my 2c worth.

I read once that you should start how you mean to finish. I can't generate more than 1 newsletter a week (actually 4 per month so that on 5 week months I can have a lay week.) But I can see that it is possible for me to stick to that frequency in the long term. So that's how it will stay.

I was receiving an almost daily newsletter (via LinkedIn) which was well-written and interesting, but I felt spammed by the frequency and so unsubscribed. No matter the content, I simply don't have the time for a continual stream of emails. (That said, we run a business, so there's a great many emails in our life!)
